They Were Our Gods - an exciting announcement!

by Paul Morrison

If there's one thing I'm often asked about this book, it's "WHEN WILL THE DAMN BOOK BE RELEASED, MORRISON?"

Well, although I'm not going to commit to an actual date, I am going to nail down the period.  They Were Our Gods will be released in Autumn 2016.

So, why then?  Well, Autumn 2016 runs from September 22nd to December 20th.  It starts the day after my birthday, and ends just before Christmas, which means that whenever in that time period I finish the book, you're going to get it in time to put it under our tree.  Yay!

I'd better give you some more details, so this next section, which I will probably put on the front page of the site too, is a bit like a press release.

The Eighties was a wonderful time to grow up, if you were a gamer.  There was so much imagination and creativity, none moreso than among those who wrote for the 8-bit computers.  It has long been my opinion that British, Australian and European programmers don't get enough recognition for the work they did, so my aim is to change that.

They Were Our Gods will feature interviews with 40 personalities across more than 500 pages.  I talk to programmers, musicians, artists, cover artists and games reviewers from the era.  There are big name industry legends, and there are also people whose names you might not recall, but whose work you certainly will.  It's a great cross-section of the people who made our hobby so much fun.

Each interviewee talks primarily about their 8-bit work.  Programmers talk about every 8-bit game they worked on.  Musicians talk about their classic themes and the process behind them.  Artists describe their best known pieces in detail.  Reviewers discuss their writing process and the difficulties of playing games to deadlines.  You'll hear much more too, such as how they became interested in computer games and who inspired them.  Every interview is exclusive to this book, with stories you've never heard before!  Be ready to read about them all in Autumn 2016... after all, They Were Our Gods!

I have the majority of my interviews in the can now.  Some are in progress, and I still intend to grab a few more before I'm finished (if you come into the categories mentioned above and I haven't been in touch, there's a fair chance I will be, although I'd welcome contact from you too!).  I've done a lot of writing already, but will be concentrating solely on that pretty soon.  I have some great names taking part, some of whom I've already announced and some who will stay a surprise until nearer the time of release.  Let me promise you this though... you'll love them all!

So there we have it.  Sixteen months from now, this thing should be done.  Sounds like a long time, but I'm sure the time will fly by.  I'd love it if you'd be on board for the journey... I'm going to give you something unique and hope to do our Gods justice!
