Sneak preview (almost)

by Paul Morrison

There are many dangers, for want of a better word, when writing a book such as this.  One of those dangers is a lack or a dropping-off of interest.  You can tell people you're working on it, but without any kind of tangible evidence, do they really believe you?

I've posted some excerpts elsewhere on the site from interviews I've had with some of the people that will be in my book.  That's pretty good evidence, I feel.  But still, people wonder if I'm really doing it.

Another danger is over-exposing what I'm doing.  It's really tempting to be too transparent, and to give too much away.  I'm really wary of doing that... I want as much of the content as possible to be a surprise until the finished book is released.  On the other hand, little teasers help to whip up a bit of excitement, and its exciting for me too.

I've come to a kind of compromise with myself, in that case.  I've been playing around with ideas for page designs, and I've decided to share some of them here.  There's a bit of a catch as far as you're concerned though... I've screen-grabbed the PDF files and turned them into smaller jpegs.  That means you can't read most of the text.  Yeah, that's naughty of me.  I'm just not ready to put full previews out there yet, sorry!

However, I think you can still get a flavour of where I'm going with this.  Everything is still subject to change, of course, although the text I have in there is mostly the final version.  You might have to take my word on that!  If you feel like commenting on the look of any of these, please do.  I'm very open to constructive criticism and there's every chance I might take some ideas on board.

Oh, and do bear in mind the fact that I have many other prototype designs, too.  This is just a small sample of ideas.  I hope it goes to show how much work I'm putting into this, and I'll keep playing and refining until I get designs I'm happy with.  And of course, I'll be getting as many interviews and as much content as I can. too!

One of the more basic designs, featuring black text on a white background, a large screenshot and a game graphic.

The same text, but with an in-game screenshot as the background. I've added a text box describing the game, here.

A two-page spread.  The Uridium level map bisects the page, with box shots and other graphics breaking up the text.
